The Shift is Here: Instagram Launches Native Affiliate Commissions for Reels
Chad Smalley
Instagram just launched native affiliate commissions for Reels. What it means for TikTok Shop, brand strategy, and creator payouts in LATAM.
Stop what you are doing. This is the social commerce update we have been waiting for, and if you are a brand owner in the LATAM market or scaling globally, you need to pay close attention. Instagram has officially launched native affiliate commissions for Reels, effectively firing a warning shot across the bow of TikTok Shop. This is not just a cosmetic update; it is a fundamental shift in how creators monetize their influence and how brands convert engagement into revenue.
At UGC LATAM, we have been tracking the move toward "creator-led commerce" for years. What TikTok popularized in 2023, Meta is finally bringing into the mainstream for Instagram users in 2026. This rollout is wide-reaching, hitting major markets including Brazil, the US, India, Indonesia, and Thailand right now. This is a full-scale launch, and it changes the math for every marketing team currently planning their content calendar.
How the Instagram Affiliate System Works
The mechanics are surprisingly straightforward but powerful. Under this new update, creators can tag up to 30 products directly within a single Reel. They do this by either pasting a direct product URL or selecting items from a brand’s existing catalog. When a viewer watches the Reel and decides to buy, the creator earns a commission based on the rate set by the brand.
The biggest friction point this solves? The "Link in Bio" dance. We have all seen it—creators begging followers to click their profile, navigate to a landing page, and find a product. That process is a conversion killer. Now, the commerce is native to the feed. While it is not yet as seamless as TikTok’s "stay-in-app" checkout, it is a massive leap forward for friction-free shopping on Meta’s platforms.
The Critical Difference: Where the Transaction Happens
There is one nuance you must understand: checkout still happens off-platform. Unlike TikTok Shop, which keeps the entire transaction inside the app, Instagram’s system redirects the user to the brand’s website or their Amazon store. It is slightly more "clunky" than TikTok, but it has a secret advantage: data ownership. You still get the traffic on your own site, which is a goldmine for retargeting pixels and customer retention.
The Backend: Getting Your Creators Paid
One of the most common questions I get from brands is, "How do we actually manage the money?" Meta isn't reinventing the wheel here. Brands manage their commission rates through Meta’s Commerce Manager or via third-party affiliate giants you likely already use, such as Shopify Collabs, Impact, or Rakuten.
UGC LATAM tip: If your brand already has an affiliate program running on Shopify Collabs or Impact, your creators can start tagging your products and earning commissions immediately. The infrastructure is built to be "plug-and-play" with your current tech stack. When a viewer taps a tagged product and completes a purchase on your site, the affiliate tracking follows them, and the payout is handled automatically by your chosen platform.
Why Your Strategy Needs to Pivot Now
Is this the end of TikTok Shop? Absolutely not. But it is massive validation for the model we preach every day: the future of retail is creator-led. TikTok proved the model works, and now the rest of the ecosystem is catching up. If you are still "testing" whether or not to work with UGC creators, you aren't just behind—shaded and siloed—you are losing market share to those who are already building communities.
The "Platform-Agnostic" Playbook
- Build a Community first: Don't just hire one-off "influencers." Build a roster of creators who truly love your brand.
- Own the Relationship: If you own the relationship with your creators, you can move them from TikTok to Instagram to YouTube Shopping as the platforms evolve.
- Activate Everywhere: Don't be a "TikTok Shop Brand" or an "Instagram Brand." Be a creator-driven brand that meets your customers where they are already scrolling.
The Bottom Line for Brands
It is still early days, and we are going to see a lot of experimentation. Creator behavior on Instagram is different than on TikTok; the intent is often more aspirational than purely transactional. However, the brands that win will be the ones that activate their creator communities early and leverage these new native tools to shorten the distance between a "like" and a sale.
Stop debating which platform is best and start focusing on the constant: High-quality, authentic user-generated content. At UGC LATAM, we are already helping brands navigate this transition by building high-performing creator networks that are ready to tag, bag, and sell. This is exactly what we saw coming. Don't be three platforms behind—let's get to work.
