TikTok Opens the Bar: How Age Verification is Changing Alcohol Marketing
Chad Smalley
Discover how TikTokโs age verification is revolutionizing alcohol marketing and how brands like Malibu are using UGC and creators to reach Gen Z.
For a long time, alcohol brands stayed away from TikTok. The rules were strict, and the risk of showing drink ads to kids was just too high. But things are changing fast. Thanks to new age verification technology, the "booze cruise" has officially arrived on the worldโs favorite short-form video app.
This tech isn't just about safety anymore; itโs a powerful tool for business. By proving exactly who is watching a video, TikTok is giving alcohol companies the green light to spend big. At UGC LATAM, we see this as a massive shift in how regulated industries connect with young adults.
Why Alcohol Brands are Hurrying to TikTok
The truth is, alcohol brands are in a tough spot with Gen Z. This generation isn't drinking nearly as much as their parents did. In fact, Gen Z accounted for only 4% of U.S. alcohol sales in 2025. Even more surprising? Nearly half of adult "Zoomers" don't drink at all.
To survive, brands like Malibu and Grey Goose have to change the conversation. They need to move away from old-school commercials and get into the lifestyle content that young people actually enjoy watching. Since over half of alcohol ad spending is now digital, TikTok is the natural place to be.
The Power of Creator Partnerships
We always say that UGC (User-Generated Content) is the bridge between a brand and a consumer. A great example of this is the recent Malibu campaign. They teamed up with comedy creator Sabrina Brier for a "Get Ready With Me" (GRWM) style video to launch their new "Malibu Pink" drink.
UGC LATAM tip: Brands shouldn't just post ads; they should partner with creators who already have the trust of their audience. This makes the product feel like a natural part of a fun night out rather than a forced sales pitch. Other big names like Espolรฒn and St-Germain are now following this same path.
Does Digital Advertising Work for Alcohol?
The data says yes. According to TikTok, 42% of users have discovered a new alcohol brand while scrolling through the app. Even better for advertisers, users of legal drinking age are 1.6 times more likely to try a new cocktail recipe compared to people who don't use the platform.
However, there are still some limits. You can't buy a bottle of vodka on TikTok Shop yet, and the U.S. government is still pushing for even tighter age checks. But for brands that play by the rules and use the right tech, the opportunity to reach "Zillennials" is too good to pass up.
In the end, while Gen Z might be drinking less, they still value experiences and "having a good time." For alcohol brands, TikTok is the best tool they have to stay relevant in a changing world.
